Suzume is a heart-stirring action-adventure that follows 17-year-old Suzume Iwato, an orphan living with her aunt in rural Kyushu. Plagued by mysterious dreams of a ruined city and a shadowy figure she believes is her late mother, her world shifts when she meets Souta, an enigmatic young man searching for doors hidden in abandoned places. These aren't ordinary doors; they unleash worm-like supernatural disasters tied to Japan’s earthquakes.
After unintentionally releasing one such “worm,” Suzume joins Souta on a thrilling journey across Japan to seal these portals. Their bond deepens as Souta is turned into a three-legged chair, and a mischievous cat named Daijin emerges as a living keystone. Their adventure takes them through vibrant cities and haunted ruins, from ferries in Ehime to Tokyo’s hidden gates to the ruins of Suzume’s childhood home, destroyed in the 2011 tsunami.
In a heartfelt climax, Suzume confronts her past, embraces her grief, and helps reseal the worm with Souta’s help. A year later, fate brings them full circle at the very place they first met, for a beautiful and emotional reunion.
