After Meiko "Menma" Honma's untimely passing, six childhood friends from Chichibu, Saitama, gradually grow apart. Jinta Yadomi, once the group's leader, becomes a recluse five years later, distancing himself from both school and society. One summer day, he is visited by the spirit of Menma, now appearing older, who gently asks him to fulfill a forgotten wish so she can find peace and move on. Although uncertain at first and believing he might be imagining her, Jinta comes to accept her presence and begins reaching out to their estranged friends, hoping they can help uncover Menma’s unfulfilled request. While the others cannot see or hear her, they eventually reunite, though doubts about Jinta's well-being linger.

As past emotions resurface and long-buried feelings come to light, tension within the group grows. Menma eventually finds a way to make her presence known to everyone, confirming her reality. Each friend, carrying a sense of guilt over her passing, must confront their own regrets. In doing so, they help Menma and themselves find peace, heal their bonds, and come to terms with their shared loss.
